Global Report on Data Preservation in HEP is out
As a result of the 5h DPHEP workshop in May 2026, the DPHEP (Data Preservation in High Energy Physics) collaboration has published a report on the advances in data preservation within the global HEP community.
The report covers three areas:
In the first area, experiments report on their advances. On the one hand, completed experiments such as the LEP experiments ALEPH, DELPHI and OPAL, the SLAC experiment BaBar, the DESY experiment H1, and the Neutrino experiment MINERvA report about their efforts to preserve in part decade-old data and make them useful also for future generations. An interesting case study in this regard is also the report about digitising photographic data from the 2m bubble chamber to use it for analysis. On the other hand, the LHC experiments ATLAS, CMS, LHCb, and ALICE report about their efforts to preserve the data for the future and making them openly available.
The second area covers transverse projects and technologies, such as the cold storage project for the Open Data Portal or new developments in REANA.
The third area then looks beyond our CERN Horizon and covers the larger landscape, such as the data preservation efforts at Chinese IHEP and Brookhaven, as well as the recommendations for best practices for data preservation by the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA).
