CERN’s KiCad component library now open source

07-05-2026

CERN has released its complete KiCad component library – more than 17 000 electronic components – under an open source licence. The library, maintained by the Design Office in BE-CEM-EPR, complements the hardware designs already published in the Open Hardware Repository. The release was guided by CERN's Electronics Design Automation Committee and the Open Source Programme Office. KiCad is a free and open source software suite for printed circuit board design that enables designers to share their work without restriction. Together with the CERN Open Hardware Licence, this release reinforces open source hardware as a key pillar of CERN's Open Science landscape.
